The primary purpose of the Bessemer and Lake Erie railroad is to transport iron ore from the harbor in Conneaut, OH to interchange with the Union Railroad in North Bessemer, PA. The ore is used at the Mon Valley Works of US Steel.

Conneaut Ore Dock 

Canadian National P & C dock in Conneaut, Ohio is responsible for transloading the Iron Ore from Great Lakes Ships to Bessemer and Lake Erie ore trains for transport to North Bessemer, PA.

Miscellaneous 

Canadian National Trains L51861 and L52461 operate over the BLE servicing the few remaning general freight customers. Known locally as the "Misc" train, they are the only train that use original Bessemer and Lake Erie SD38s and SD402-Ts.
